Of Mice and Men takes place on a rural farm in California. The book takes place in about 1936 because that was the time when it was written. The story takes place in about a week. The book is written in third person point of view. The author John Steinbeck refers to the book as a playable novel. He wrote the book in such a way that it can either be read as a short novel or read as a play. At the beginning of the book we find our main characters, Lennie and George, on a trail after just leaving Weed because of a misunderstanding that Lennie had with the law. The main characters are going to work on a ranch just south of Weed in a town called Soledad. In the morning they make their way to the ranch and meet an old man named Candy. He tells them a little bit about the ranch until the boss comes in. The boss tells them that they will be working on Slim 's bucking team and asks them where they were from and where they last worked. Soon after the boss leaves, his son Curley comes in and tries to start a fight with Lennie. When Curley leaves, his wife comes in claiming she was looking for him. After that Lennie and George met Slim, a jerkline skinner who welcomed them with open arms. Later that night Slim gives Lennie one of his newly born pups. George says that if he doesn 't kill it he can tend the rabbits when they get their stake. That night Carlson put Candy 's old dog out of its misery. When Lennie and George start talking about their future plans for their land, Candy offers to put in three hundred and fifty bucks to let him stay with them. Soon after that, Slim, Curley, and Carlson come in to the bunkhouse and Curley starts a fight with Lennie. Curley attacks Lennie, continually hitting him in the face until Lennie catches his hand and breaks it with one …show more content…
He is freaking out because he thinks that George won 't let him tend the rabbits. Suddenly, Curley 's wife comes into the barn and tries to console him. She tells him that she likes to pet her hair, so he tries it and she freaks out. Not knowing what to do he grabs on tighter to her hair and she freaks out. The climax of the story occurs when Lennie accidentally kills her using his strength by shaking her head. He leaves knowing that he needs to go back to the forest where they slept during the beginning of the story. A few hours later Candy discovers her and and goes to tell George who instantly knew that it was Lennie. George left and Candy went to go get the others. When the others found her they decided that they need to find Lennie and kill him. George comes back and tells them that Lennie went south knowing that he went back north where they came from. George finds Lennie laying by the river and tells him that everything will be ok. Then, using a Luger that he stole from Carlson, he shoots Lennie in the back of the head putting him out of his
