The key items that caused the Great depression were the stock market crash, bank failures, reduction in purchasing across the board, the American Economic policy with Europe, and the drought conditions. On October 29, 1929, Dark (Black) Tuesday hit Wall Street as speculators exchanged practically 16 million shares on the New York Stock Trade in a solitary day. Billions of dollars were lost, wiping out a large number of financial specialists. In the consequence of Black Tuesday, America and whatever remains of the industrialized world spiraled descending into the Great Depression. During this time production was decreasing and the unemployment rate was increasing rapidly. This was the number one factor of the Great depression. When the stock market crashed many people ran to the banks and emptied out their bank accounts because they were afraid of what was going to happen with their money. Many of the banks could not cover their customers taking out their money because that had put too much money into the stock market and lost it all. In 2013, the official poverty rate was 14.5 percent, down from 15.0 percent in 2012 in the United States.. This was the first decrease in the poverty rate since 2006. The population of cook county is 5,240,700 people and the poverty rate in this county in 2013 was 17.8%. These facts/statistics show how life was and is like in poverty. The loss of jobs and the loss of much needed income put many families in poverty. Unfortunately; poverty is all around the world and is a big problem in the United States especially. Single mothers with many children like Barbara Brooks has to sacrifice many of their wants to have enough money for their needs. Brooks is a mother of 5 who is trying to fulfill a fulltime position as a student and as a worker that earns $8.25/hr at a juvenile detention facility; the father is no where to be found/ in jail. It is difficult for her because she has to try to find the money to feed her children with, to keep the lights and heat on in the house and to make sure her children get an education. This is very difficult for a woman making such little money with five children, The same stories go with Mary Venittelli and Jean Reynold. Many people live in fear about what is going to be evicted from them next and how they are going to eat the next day. Thankfully the New Deal programs and food stamps are available to individuals with a specific income
