Case Study Miamifield

With a population of about 50,000, Miamifield is a city located in the south west corner of Ohio. Specifically, Miamifield is located in Cook County and is the focal point for the county’s administrative and judicial offices. Being that we are in the heart of the Rust Belt, Miamifield has a long history of industry and manufacturing, but is now a days more a more popular homestead for legal professionals that work in the downtown offices. With outsourcing increasing daily, the unemployment rate has skyrocketed to a shocking 8%. This has lead to a large income gap between the Upper Class and the middle/lower. In efforts to try and fix the problem with the unemployment, the previous mayor tried to promote a “high tech industrial park” and …show more content…
As Dewey thought, “democracy is a way in which people come together to deliberate in order to adjust to the ever-changing world that we inhabit.” (Quantz 2015, Kindle Locations 354-355) Coming together to adjust to the ever-changing world, the team and we have concluded that there are many changes to the Miamifield schools system that we would like to propose, specifically focusing on the high school. Although we agree with parts of the Essentialism and and Perennialism, we made our policy recommendations based on our beloved professor, Justice Dewey, and his ideas of progressivism. After discussing with my team, I chose to focus on the issues of gender and intersectionality that the Miamifield High School is dealing with. Some of the biggest issues that the group saw was the crazy number of students that are dropping out of high school, the topic of LGBTQ, and the idea of a more liberal (as in broad) and diversifying education. To answer these, we have come up with some precise solutions that will help sometimes in more than one problem …show more content…
We did a little research on the average dropout rate comparing males and females and found that, “Between 1990 and 2014, the male status dropout rate declined from 12.3 to 7.1 percent, with nearly the entire decline occurring after 2000 (when it was 12.0 percent). For females, the rate declined from 11.8 percent in 1990 to 9.9 percent in 2000, and then decreased further to 5.9 percent in 2014. In 2014, the status dropout rate was higher for males than for females.” (National Center for Education Statistics) Looking at the study on Miamifield, we have the exact opposite of the national trend, we have more females dropping out of school rather than boys. And to add to our abnormal findings, our dropout rate is more than double the national average. Looking deeper into the case study, we have an increasing problem of teen pregnancy in our little town of Miamifield. Two proposals that we have to combat this problem of increasing teen pregnancy is a more liberal approach to sex education. We obviously can tell that what we are doing now with the, “Finding Your Kindred Soul Mate” two week abstinence-only module is not working. The only way that we are going to be able to slow down the teen pregnancy rate is to teach student how to be in a responsible relationship where they understand the risks that come along with being

According to Hulton (2007), teenage pregnancy is influenced by environmental factors such as peer pressure, the communities and the schools. This model serves as a useful guide for school nurses when implementing health programs in the school. The program was named “Vision of You,” and it was designed to help encourage students to practice abstinence. This program educated the students about the effects of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.…

That strategy can come in the form of condom distribution to protect these students against unwanted pregnancies and diseases. Giving out condoms to students doesn’t open a door to having sex, but instead opens the door to discuss the responsibility of what sex outside of marriage entails. Even if the use of condoms hasn’t slowed down sexual activity in teens and young adults, the availability of being able to get condoms at schools can at least help cut down pregnancies and most sexually transmitted diseases among students that consistently use them. Teens and young adults…

The program aims to reduce the rates of unprotected sex among high school students by discussing the consequences while they are still young. The curriculum is also intended for students of all ethnicities and racial backgrounds, which helps show the accuracy of the program based on the results from schools all over the nation. Reducing the Risk is different than other sexual education programs because it not only covers sexual issues, such as unintended pregnancies, STIs, and contraceptive usage, but also because it seeks to help engage parent-child discussion about sexual health concerns (Kirby et al., 1991). The program increases awareness and demonstrates common risky situations to teach students how to make wise decisions before getting stuck in situations where they are forced to make impulse decisions (Zimmerman, R., et al,…

today, and, to solve it, the primary goal is to prevent unprotected or untimely intercourse, by not only providing young people the opportunity to receive adequate sex education, but also, by improving the values and skills that will enable them to timely become sexually active (Donovan). With such significant goal in mind, an effective commitment by teens, parents, public schools, and American society is urgently needed, in order to avoid early teen pregnancy. Prevention calls to encourage that, at all times, the correct information reaches the precise target at the right time; otherwise, any sexual activity for which teenagers are poorly prepared, may lead them to negative physical, mental and financial consequences. Under those circumstances, more effective sex education programs in public schools must be implemented in the near future, and, parents, as well as, each member of every community, are called to make any likely effort to build a better future for those young generations; by adopting policies that support and equip young people with knowledge, skills and services to prevent, at all cost, unintended and unwanted teen…
