Japan is associated with so many natural disasters. This is because the island, Japan is located where the North American, Pacific, Eurasian, and Philippine plate meet, also known as plate boundaries. Japan is also located where the Pacific plate and the Philippine plate are subducting. This results in the stress building up where the two plates are subducting. How do plates move? Well, plates move when uneven heating in the mantle creates currents. This current is a convection current, and these currents create different types of plate boundaries. Divergent boundaries split apart from each other and form rift valleys. Transform boundaries slide, and convergent boundaries collide.Eventually, the stress builds up and once it’s released it sends out seismic waves being sent out which produces an earthquake. Once this earthquake has hit Japan a tsunami follows. Sometimes an earthquake can even make an active volcano build up more pressure and explode.Plate boundaries is also where volcanoes and earthquakes are formed. Earthquakes are vibrations in the ground that result from different faults, including a normal, strike-slip, and reverse fault. This island gets earthquakes multiple times a day. The biggest earthquake, measured in magnitude, was a 9.0 earthquake on March 11, 2011 that also triggered a tsunami. Since Japan is made of islands, the water surrounding it went out into the ocean and raced back in with massive force. It ended up killing a total of almost 16,000 people. The island is also made of volcanoes. Out of the volcanoes that are on the island, only 108 are active. Out of the volcanoes that are on our project, Volcano 1, Volcano 3, Volcano 5, and Volcano 6 are active.
