Miami Children’s Initiative (MCI) is located in the heart of Liberty City, Miami. MCI service over 60 families throughout Liberty City by providing early childhood programs, family, social services and health, and community building. MCI develop a similar approach to the Harlem Children’s Zone evidence-based cradle to career model. While using the block to block strategy, MCI has embedded itself within the neighborhood; they invest in the children and their families and changed the look and feel of each block. “From year-round education programs for children and families to the creation of community spaces to the integration of community policing, and paid internships for the youth in the neighborhood, our work has resulted in serious engagement and community ownership of their brilliance and academic experience” (MCI, “n.d.”). MCI has build trust in the community which has allowed them to fully integrate themselves in all aspect of Liberty City to provide programs and create continuum of solutions for Liberty City’s children and families.

The group as well as Mr. Miller and two other workers from the community center collected trash around the community. We were told, this is their early morning daily routine. Healthy Liberty City is another serviceable program to the community; the community garden and Ufit gym and Bikeshare, just to name two, we toured. We than proceeded with handing flyers out by knocking on doors to educate families on the upcoming health fair and how some of the vendors can be beneficial in providing services. Out of ten plus doors I knocked on, all the children answered, I though this was interesting, however, you can hear the parents in the background shouting thank you.
