As the sun was rising in Saskatoon, Ophelia was hurrying around like a busy bee. It was her third day of University and there was no way that she was going to be late. It had been four months since she left to New York and Ophelia was no closer to getting over it. With worried thoughts running through her head, she sprinted down the hard oak stairs, took a sharp left and grabbed a steaming hot coffee off the kitchen table, before rushing out the door. “Have a good day sweetie,” called Ophelia’s mom, Jennifer. “Bye mom!” bellowed the winded girl as she ran to the bus stop. Her long brown hair was both in her mouth and tangled with the key chain hooked to her light blue bag. She’d have to deal with that once she got on the …show more content…

The two of them had become closer in two months, than most people ever become in their entire life. Jordyn had formed a huge crush on the tall brunette and didn’t feel she was being too discreet about it, but Ophelia was far past oblivious. Recently, Ophelia’s friends had been trying to set her up with some nice girls, but so far no luck. Apollo had introduced his sister Delta in hopes of a spark igniting, but all that resulted was three empty milkshakes and a friendly hug goodbye. Deanna, leggy, beautiful, and daring, came a long way from a rugged childhood and the time of liquor bottles aimed at her mother’s head. So said a Washington Post reporter in 2008, “Councilwoman Deanna Flin is a fresh face and a breath of fresh air in D.C. politics.” In the eyes of her colleagues (boozing old school boys with potty mouths and potbellies), she personified Hillary Clinton, the little engine that would, if she could, overturn the political status quo. “Too big for her britches,” said one, which struck Deanna as funny, but not in the ha-ha-ha way.…

Throughout human history, recurring stories and themes pop up around the world, crossing borders of both language and culture. Though they can vary from tales of a great flood to how the world came to be, the most common and easily-identifiable is the Hero’s Journey. Outlined by Joseph Campbell, the Hero’s Journey is the story of a great person travelling to a strange, otherworldly place (literal or metaphorical,) facing a fearsome enemy, and returning to the “normal” world having gained wisdom and experience. The most famous of these tales, like The Odyssey or the Epic of Gilgamesh, have masculine heroes, defined by traits like bravery, strength, or fearlessness. However, two famous stories of a descent into a literal and metaphorical underworld…
