These are all events in which I had to be independent and for a while I thought I was. However, it was not until I was around twelve years old when I realized that I was the rock in my family. My parents are both immigrants from Mexico and thus their main language is Spanish. Therefore, they were not able to do much in terms of speaking up for me or even themselves in some cases. Every time my mother had to be admitted into the hospital, I was the one who had to go along with her because I spoke English and could translate for her. If something ever broke in the house and we had to call customer service, I’d be the one who had to talk since I was the one who spoke English.

My parents and I agreed that I had to transfer to another school that was a lot closer to home since the commute was a waste of valuable time. We had to go to several schools to ask if they had any spaces available to which most schools alluded to not having. When we arrived at each of those schools, I had to speak up for myself.
