Chapter 5 Of On Course

Chapter 5 of “On Course” provides an in-depth discussion on employing interdependence. Within the chapter were a few subtopics, for example, creating a support network, using resources, creating study groups and Saying “No”. While reading I was naturally attracted to the point of Saying “No” on page 160 on the grounds that I could identify with having a troublesome time with regards to denying other individual solicitation and that has affected my goals even deferred them. The art of saying “no” to people is an important tool for an assertive creator because it helps to keep them on the desired path by prioritizing their owns goals and managing time to do tasks that would contribute to achieving those said goals. Monique was similar to me for the reason that she’s always saying yes to other people’s requests and in effect that cost her to become counterproductive. She became overwhelmed with work, lost track of her objective and that her grades started to drop. Her instructor advises her to master the art of saying “no” to people when they request things that she felt would not help her development in her own personal goals. She did as instruct and transformed herself from being exhausted to exhilarate. I made a similar change in my life by becoming more aware of when to say no and when to say yes. This ties to the previous sections on skills of a successful student. More importantly, it relates to chapter 4 idea of important skills for mastering self-management. It deals with having great time management skills and staying focused on the important tasks. In page 120 of “On Course” it expresses that a struggling student with an unfocused mind and no self-discipline dashes from one distraction to another until they fall behind in school. Distractions like other people’s needs are endless and if we are constantly trying to please everyone, then we are sure to get lost in an endless cycle no advancement toward accomplishing their goals. Successful people learn to master effective skills, for example, saying “no” from time to time and enhancing their time
