Formal support refers to help from professional caregivers that get paid such as doctors, nurses, and social workers (Novak, 2012). Informal support refers to help that is provided by friends, neighbors, and family members (Novak, 2012). When we look at social support as it relates to aging in my family, my mother being the oldest member of the family is the one who has built a decent circle of social support for herself. She lives away from all the other family, but I am close enough that I can be there within an hour, so I am her primary support. She also has friends in the community that help her and a sister and brother that live in Texas that check her on regularly and are willing to help her if she needs it. There is a large informal social support circle for my mother, but her formal support circle is limited. She has her primary care doctor and a therapist which make up her formal support circle. Use of social supports in our family is primarily informal, we use primarily other family members or close friends unless it is a medical condition that needs to be addressed then we have our primary
