Assignment 1: Genetic Information Resources
There are several areas to retrieve information on genetics. The following paragraphs will summarize three organizations that provide information on genetics, genetic counseling, and genetic testing. The summary will include what information is obtainable from the site, who supports the site, and who may use the site to obtain information.
The first organization is Gene Testes. Gene test help support the appropriate use of genetic services used in patient care and helps to aid in personal decision making. Gene Tests provides lists …show more content…
The OMIM is a comprehensive, and continuously updated online catalog of human genes and genetic disorders and traits, with primary focus on the molecular relationship between the genetic variation and phenotypic expression (Using OMIM, n.d.). Therefore, OMIM focuses on the relationship between phenotype and genotype. OMIM is used primarily by physicians, professionals concerned with genetic disorders, genetics researchers, and advanced science and medical students. The OMIM database is open to the public users seeking information about a personal medical or genetic conditions, but are encouraged to consult with a physician for proper diagnosis or answers to personal questions regarding information accessed on the website. The organization is funded by the National Human Genome Research Institute, and the website is supported by the John Hopkins Medicine and a grant from the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (Using OMIM, …show more content…
The question to be answered is which of the following developmental issues: biological, cognitive, and social processes in development, continuity versus discontinuity, nature versus nurture, stability versus change, and periods of development receives the greatest emphasis. After reading chapter 2, I feel nature versus nurture has the greatest emphasis. Although, the majority of the chapter is about genetics, genetic testing, reproductive challenges, diagnostic tests, and adoption, the major question is still the great debate of nature verses nurture. Genetics play a major role in development. As in the example of the twins, Jim Springer and Jim Lewis, being separated at 4 weeks of age. The twins grew up in different environments, but had several similarities such as: job type, vacation destinations, vehicle types, pet names, and spouse and child names (Santrock, 2014). Genetically, they looked similar and they had similar personalities. This would be nature, not nurture. Chapter 2 also discusses three ways heredity and the environment are correlated. The three ways include: passive, evocative, and active (niche-picking). Passive includes inherited tendencies from the biological parents and the parents also provide the same tendencies in the environment (Santrock, 2014). Evocative is when a child
