1. Why do muezzins pursue their profession? Does delivering the call to prayers seem important to them? Elaborate (include a quote)
There are many reasons for muezzins to pursue their profession such as traditions. Many Muslims grew up in families where delivering azan was a tradition passed and encouraged from one generation to the other. In addition, education is another reason to pursue this profession. Some muezzins were taught in Imam’s school or Istanbul conservatory to specifically build their ability deliver the azan. Delivering the call to prayer is so important to the muezzins because it is a way to declare their faith and receive the merit of the good deed. The muezzin Isa Aydin in the film said, “The more people I can attract to the mosque with my voice, the more successful I am”. Therefore, delivering azan is also significant to muezzins because it is linked to their success in life.

2. How is the azan taught? How do the muezzins learn to sing the azan?
Azan is taught either in Imam’s schools inside the mosques, Istanbul conservatory, or self-taught through listening to cassettes. They were aware of different musical scales, such as the Rask. Also, when practicing or talking to friends, they used musical terms such as pitch, melody, and octaves. The poorly educated individual would probably refer to these aspects using non-musical terms. I personally feel that muezzins are trying to increase their level of musicianship. Because the more knowledge they have, the better the delivery of the azan. Moreover, one guy said in the film that “No music means no competition”.
