Meyer Center Reflection

Decent Essays
On Monday, October 12, 2015 I was more than excited to enter the Meyer center for my second day at the site. I had falling in love with the kids during my first experience and the thought of seeing a different group of kids I could fall in love with was more than enough to make my heart explode. I was able to experience more children with disabilities, check out their treatments and rehabilitation skills it would take to get them back on a path to having normal developmental, behavioral and intellectual milestones reached. Overall it was a great day at the Meyer center. The next day I was scheduled to attend the clinical rotation at the school for the deaf and blind of South Carolina. I was very nervous about that situation. Being in an area

I have been volunteering with the Spina Bifida Association of Alabama (SBA) for five years. I first decided to begin working with this association because working with children who have disabilities has always held a special place in my heart. Working with the SBA has helped me make a difference in my community and bring awareness to the disease of Spina Bifida. Spina Bifida victims have many limitations. The disease causes problems with their walking skills and most victims become confined to a wheel chair early in life.…

When I decided to volunteer at the Del Amo Gardens Care Center, I wasn’t quite sure if I was emotionally ready. In March of 2013, my grandpa suffered a very severe stroke. It caused so much damage that it paralyzed half of his body, so we had to put him in a nursing home. Shortly after starting my volunteering, however, any negativity faded away as I was eager to assist with the activities.…

My first words were “cookie” and “more.” With blonde hair reminiscent of blinding bursts of sunlight and pudgy hands that undoubtedly shook with unrestrained excitement, I—or rather, my one year old self—requested that I get another cookie. I did not, however, ask for the delectable treat with simmering wisps of steam rising from it with the faltering voice of a callow toddler. Rather, I asked for that chocolate delicacy with the awkward movement of chubby hands that contorted uncomfortably. My first words were “cookie” and “more” and I asked for them in sign language.…

To start off I want to explain what brought me to this class. I have known that I wanted to work with individuals with exceptionalities since early high school, but I found a huge liking to the clinical side of things. I initially was looking at going into occupational therapy and my senior year in high school I shadowed a Speech Language Pathologist and absolutely fell in love. This is my second year at MSUM, but I am a junior credit-wise and have never thought about changing majors. I am also working on getting a minor in special education because it is something I love learning about and that knowledge will be extremely helpful in my future career as a Speech Pathologist.…

Before taking this course and being out in the field for 20 hours, special education was not my ideal teaching job. Special education was always intimidating to me because there is so much important information that is needed. IEP’s, parents, and goal setting are just a few to name that intimidated me until now. After getting to experience being in a special education room with the students and asking Nicole Degroot questions about these topics, I now I feel that special education may be the positon for me. From the first day of my observation hours, Mrs. Degroot made me feel completely welcome and comfortable, which made the experience that much better.…

After meeting Leslie Kuhn,I may have had a central purpose with my life. Well, not Leslie A. Kuhn of MSU herself, but whenever I describe Lilian, their characters seem quite parallel. Not only is she the most brilliant lady I have ever met,but she also exhibits a compassionate heart. Sadly, people never recognize Lilian as the beautiful individual she is or what she has to offer. While the society describe her as ''challenged'',I came to recognize her as unexpected role model.…
