Mexico's Digital Divide

The term digital divide refers to the “gap between demographics and regions that have access to modern information and communications technology, and those that don't or have restricted access.” Countries such as United States of America, Canada, and Japan have the highest percentages of households with Internet access. Countries in South America often have a much lower number of households with Internet, and have thin bandwidth coverage. In Mexico, about 35% of homes have a computer, but 14% of these percentages do not have access to Internet. In comparison to other countries in South America, Mexico lags behind other nations such as Chile, Argentina, and Brazil. Northern parts of Mexico closer to the North American border have a higher percentage of households with internet, and as you move south less and less households have internet. There is a direct correlation between GDP/capita in different states and their Internet access. Mexico has allotted money in grants for non-profits that are committed to giving computer access to all, and strongly suggests other nations do this as well. Giving people access to the Internet improves their education and can improve their quality of life, and no government should intentionally suppress access from the people. Nations should try to make major cities tech friendly, and provide computers in major hubs, which will be accessible to an array of people. Mexico thinks that nations should take measures to censor websites that do not promote the welfare of the people, and could pose a threat. If a website is deemed unsafe or could harm the nation, the government should temporarily block it.
