Mexico Superstition

Superior Essays
I boarded the plane feeling very excited and yet terrified at the same time. I felt this way because my family was traveling all the way to Cancun, Mexico for my uncles wedding. I was under the superstition that once we stepped off the plane, I would be shot, causing me to want to remain in cozy little Marshall. I was in fifth grade at the time, making it easier to cave into these beliefs. These superstitions may have been true in other parts of Mexico, but not where I stayed. I resided at a resort in Cancun that was absolutely stunning. The water reflected in the sunlight, so I could see myself like I was looking into a mirror and the seagulls screeched wherever they flew. While I was there, many noticeable differences stood out in the way …show more content…
I’ve never seen anything like it. The water glistened and shined like something out of a movie, seeming unrealistic and dreamlike. I’m so used to murky or exceptionally cloudy water, shocking me even more by how beautiful it was. My family had the luxury of basically doing whatever we wanted to in the ocean. This was reinforced by the second largest coral reef in the world, the Grand Mayan Reef. It was right off the shore of the resort. Seeing this, we often went snorkeling, cruising across the waves in a boat, or for some, even scuba dive. I was too young to go scuba diving, but even if I was of age, I wouldn’t have been able to work up the courage to plunge into the deep dark sea with only a mask with a tank to provide my oxygen. This was completely new to me compared to Marshall where all we had were a few lakes around us that looked microscopic compared to the ocean. There also wasn’t anything comparable to the reef nearby, so this truly added something special to the trip. Before boarding the boat, our supervisor for the trips would provide us with a ton of information about the reef. “These reefs are booming with life at all times, but we are slowly killing the reef, giving the fish no habitat to live in,” he would tell us. Hearing this information saddened me, mainly due to the fact that the reef was such a gorgeous place, I never understood why people would not do anything to help keep the area …show more content…
I didn’t want to leave this gorgeous place to head back to boring old Marshall that didn’t have anything to offer that was even close to Mexico. The trip finally ended and I was forced to board a plane back to the United States. This trip helped me realize how different other parts of the world are from where I’m from and that no matter what, there are new and exciting opportunities for you to do at any point. This trip also changed how I viewed Mexico as a whole. Before the trip, I imagined it as a poverty full, drug dominate country that didn’t have much to offer. After visiting though, I understood that the complete opposite was true and that Mexico provided so much. Not only did it add diversity to my life, but it added so much more joy that I hadn’t been experiencing. This vacation was the most memorable and fun one I’ve ever been on and probably will ever be

The booming voice called out for my little family of four to board our plane, a plane that would take us to the depths of a mysterious alien world. Or at least that’s what little six-year-old me thought when I left my home country of Cuba to come to the United States. That was a time of emotional turmoil for me, feeling the pain of leaving everything and everyone I knew behind. There was the excitement and fear of coming to a new unknown place, but there was also a feeling of dread at this vast language barrier that I was facing, and finally accepting and adapting to this new life. Coming from Cuba was a difficult experience that helped me grow and learn.…
