At the top of Mexico’s racial social stratification system is Spaniards and the bottom is Native Indians. A historical force that contributed to this hierarchy was the hacienda system which came about due to the conquest led by Spaniards. The racial stratification in Mexico is similar to the United States in light of the fact that the history began with the genocide of the native population; however, Mexico and the United States are different due to the fact that the United States has more pluralism than Mexico. Historical forces that affected the hierarchy of race in the United States was the manifest destiny and slavery. During the genocide of Native Americans was the enslavement of an entire race specifically. The hierarchy of race in the United States was influenced tremendously from its beginnings. Manifest destiny was an idea that helped to justify America’s expansion into Mexican territory and the removal of the rest of Native Americans. Manifest destiny also gave grounds to European settlers to believe that they were superior to those who were not European settlers. Slavery contributed to the hierarchy of the United States because of the fact that it made those of African descant subordinate to whites. It is evident that there is, as a matter of fact, a race hierarchy from institutional racism and the culture of prejudice. The term “Driving While Brown” or “Driving While Black” shows how statistically minorities are arrested and also shows institutional racism; these terms also show the culture of prejudice that surrounds us due to the fact that of the stereotypes placed on black people or those who are …show more content…
Take for example the African American community: those of darker skin are considered to be inferior to those who are have a lighter skin tone. Not only is this colorism, but is a belief that justifies racisms. The racial hierarchy that exist in both American society and Mexican society does include those who are inferior to another. In both of these societies, those who were first conquered are closer to the top and those who were conquered are closer to the bottom. An explanation of the racial hierarchy system for both American societies can be summed by the quote "History is written by the victors" by Winston Churchill. Latin Americans in American civilization are not at the bottom nor top of the hierarchy but the middle. A reason for why Latin Americans are not at the top of the hierarchy is the “The War on Drugs” and immigration policies. Due to negative happenings in the original countries broadcasted on American television, some believe that Latin Americans are violent and want to come to America to escape taxes.
