Mexico De Mayo Thesis

At the Battle of Puebla in 1862, the Mexican Army, led by a general named Zaragoza, fought against the French and won an unlikely victory. This battle took place during a very chaotic time in Mexico’s history. However, the Mexican Army still managed to achieve success with the many struggles they were facing. Following their success, the soldiers held a party in celebration of their massive achievement. Cinco de Mayo, the 5th of May, reminds people of the numerous struggles that Mexicans faced during this period of time, marks the victory of the Mexican Army, and provides a day of celebration in a remembrance of the triumphant success of that particular day.

In Mexico, most celebrations are held in the town of Puebla. People celebrate by having parades, food, music, and dancing. During the larger parades, people can be seen dressed up as Mexican and French soldiers. Often people can be seen reenacting the battle that took place. Traditional Mexican cuisine is eaten during these celebrations, being sold by vendors. Generally Mexican folk music is played during these parties, along with Mariachi bands performing. Along with having traditional Mexican music, the dancing is also traditional in Mexican culture. Cinco de Mayo is internationally celebrated in remembrance of this tremendous victory in Mexican history.
