One such spot is Tommy T’s, an arcade that doubles as ice cream parlor, where my brother and I would walk up to for a scoop of cookies and cream ice cream. Across the street from there is the Exxon gas station where we routinely loaded up on sugary drinks and candy. Then down the road there is the old grocery store where everything is overpriced, but of course must be checked out to see if anything is worth trying to talk our mom into buying. There is a rental house where I stayed in with my best friend Nicole one summer when she vacationed with us. At that house we stood in the driveway in knee deep water while it continued pouring down rain with the wind blowing insanely and all the while we were just throwing a football around. Of course there is the beach itself too. The beach is where most of the daytime is spent riding waves, tanning, learning to skim board, building sand castles, and occasionally going sand crabbing in the evening. It instantly make me recall brother and I sneaking upstairs to watch cartoons instead of putting on sunscreen to go down to the beach. And the time my brother and I secretly watched Jaws and and it absolutely terrified me to the point where I couldn't sleep and did not want to get in the water for the rest of the week. Or the time my family had to stand on one of the swiveling bar stools and climb up to the deck to unlock the master bedroom from the sliding door when I accidentally locked us out of the room because my stuffed animals “needed to rest”. These are all simple silly memories that mean the world to me, probably because now my family is dwindling and we aren’t as close as we once were. So sometimes I miss these simple things, like playing Uno and Yahtzee for hours before bed after spending a day at the beach riding waves.
