On May 9th, 1846 mexican soldiers fired upon americans north of the Rio Grande. Texas was once part of mexico but was annexed in 1845. The fight was over the border that was made to divide Mexico and Texas. When president James K. Polk sent troops into the disputed area then that was what started this war. America was not right to got to war because U.S.A was robbing the land, Polk provoked the war, and slavery will expand.…
The Mexican War began after Mexico and America reached a breaking point with each other. Tensions rose when America and Mexico could not decide on a border for Texas. Mexico believed the border was the Nueces River, but America believed the border was the Rio Grande River, this event, along with others, caused the war. The U.S. was not justified in going to war with Mexico. One reason is the people of Mexico did nothing, and America only wants to go to war so they can add another slave state to the union, and because they are hungry for more land.…
In 1846-1848,( “In 1846 the United States went to war with Mexico.”, Overview) the Mexican War occurred just above Mexico and just below Texas,(“Congress of Texas… had declared the Rio del Norte to be the boundary of that republic”,Doc B, p2). The Alamo, the Trails West, and the Texas Revolution all led up to this war.(COUNT)Mexico was the one who actually went on American land, but America did much more. The United States was not ready to go to war with Mexico. They never got the chance to see exactly how strong Mexico was. (THESIS)They were unjustified in going to war with Mexico because of broken laws, robbery, and them attacking Mexico.…
The United States was unjustified in going to war with Mexico because Americans abused the idea of the Manifest Destiny, broke the laws the Mexican government had set, and the annexation of Texas was used as “a declaration of war (Doc. C, paragraph 2)” by Mexico. The Manifest Destiny was the belief that the United States was to stretch its borders from coast to coast. President Polk was a strong believer in Manifest Destiny. Mexico was just another obstacle in his way. He believed that Mexico was “hampering our power, limiting our greatness and checking the fulfillment of our Manifest Destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence…
So Polk asks Congress for a declaration of war. He said “[Mexico] has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon the American soil . . . .” (Document C). The war was popular with the southerners and westerners because the war meant more land. The northern on the other hand, argue that Polk provoked the war in the first place.…
In January 1846 he sent troops under General Zachary Taylor into the disputed area between the Río Grande and the Nueces. In late April a Mexican force under General Mariano Arista crossed the Río Grande and attacked an American patrol, killing or wounding 16 soldiers. On May 11, Polk sent a message to Congress and demanded a declaration of war against Mexico, claiming that Mexico had “invaded our territory and shed American blood.” His stated objective was the acquisition of California and New Mexico.…
Logan Lee 4\27\15 English-2nd Hour Social Studies-3rd Hour America was not justified for war After becoming free from its mother country, Spain just a mere 25 years earlier, Mexico was in a brutal war with the United States. Many events led up to the war. It started off with Mexico declaring itself free from Mexico, becoming a free country.…
In (Document D) it says that by the the time Mexico freed itself from Spain, the U.S had already begun to move into Texas. “The idea was...that this extensive province ought to become part of the United States.”(Doc D)“The Anglo-Saxon foot is already on California’s borders….armed with plough and rifle,”(Doc A). This suggests that the U.S is already ready to take over California from Mexico and is waiting for a chance to get it. “Polk did not just want to annex Texas, he also had his eye on California” (background essay) helps support this…
How did America become the country it is today? The Mexican War started in the year 1846 at the “Texas Side” of Rio Grande. It started after the Mexicans fired upon the Americans on the Rio Grande, and President Polk, the U.S. president at the time, saw it as a reason to go to war. However, was the U.S. really justified in going to war with Mexico?…
In other words, Mexico was somewhat being jeopardized. Furthermore, Doc C states,”The American government acted like a bandit who came upon a traveler.” This quote is saying that Mexico (the traveler) was only trying to help and encourage Americans to come populate their land. Soon after, the United States took the opportunity to begin to take the land. Moreover, the background essay says, “Mexican soldiers had fired upon Americans on the ‘Texas side’ of the Rio Grande, President Polk had a reason for going to war” This quote is implying that Polk was just looking for an excuse to get into war.…
The Mexican war caused conflict within America. In 1836, after Mexico had won its independence from Spain, Texas rebelled against the Mexican government. Texas won its independence from Mexico with the help of US troop, but Mexico did not recognize the new Republic of Texas. The United States did not originally want any trouble with Mexico, and turned down Texas' request to join the Union but then this was later changed when Mexico refused to let the US purchase Texas.…
Mexico got affected mostly in terms of economy because if Mexico had kept the land it used to have (including Texas) it would have had around yearly 4.355 trillion more US dollars (Or $4,355,000,000). In fact California makes up to 2.4 Trillion US dollars yearly (Or 2,400,000,000), so basically half of the GDP in Mexico's former territory. So, in conclusion if Mexico had kept their territory and all the company's that are currently there, Mexico would have a GDP of 5.616 Trillion Dollars (Or $5,616,000,000). US didn’t really want war, instead it was because in that time they believed that the expansion of the US was inevitable and both justified. The cause of the war was that the US was trying to annex Texas into the union because they knew that Texas had fine agricultural production, cotton in particular.…
There are different interpretation about manifest destiny today, many people define Manifest Destiny was a 19th century doctrine that the united states had the right and duty to expand through out the North American Territory. John O'sullivan defined manifest destiny as the divine and God given right of the American people to expand through the lands. I'll be defining Manifest destiny differently, Manifest destiny to me was/is the greedy want for resources, economical wealth, and land which drove the American government into causing an historical aberration i.e the trail of tears and the Mexican war which will remain in history forever. Expansionists/Nationalists felt the republic needed to expand so as to keep growing economically, military might etc even though it resulted to the killings of native Americans and a civil war between America and Mexico. Many supported Manifest destiny for moral, political, parotitic reasons but the Southerners supported it because they thought it would help spread slavery in the states.…
The Mexican American War was the first war that the United States primarily fought on foreign soil of which led to great amounts of bloodshed at the detriment of Mexico. The United States originally provoked the war as U.S. president James K. Polk set his eyes on expanding west as he believed in “Manifest Destiny”. The War was a result of the United States Annexation of Texas. Texas was its own Republic from 1836 through 1845 after winning it war for Independence. Mexico although never recognized its independence while the United States did recognize Texas as a sovereign country in 1837 but it did decline to annex the territory.…
The United States was not justified in going to war with Mexico because, America invaded mexico ,American were stealing land from Mexico, and the American were disobeying Mexico rules when they were in Texas. During the year 1821, Mexico gained its independence from Spain. Before America took mexico’s land, it was about the size of the United States itself. Mexico stretched from Guatemala to Oregon . Texas tried two time to apply for annexation to the United States, both times Congress said no. in 1844, when James k. Polk, a strong supporter of the manifest destiny ( god’s plan the America extend its territory all the way to the pacific ocean) became president, Polk didn’t only want to annex Texas, but he also wanted California (Roden background essay).…
