After James K. Polk was elected in late 1844, he proved to be a strong supporter of Manifest Destiny. Polk believed it was God's plan that America should extend its territory all the way to the Pacific Ocean. President Polk paced an efficient military force between the Nueces and the Del Norte. This was necessary to meet a threatened invasion of Texas by the Mexican army.
