Personal Narrative: My Experience In Mexican History

Improved Essays
I was born in Mexico in the state of Nayarit in a Rancho (village) called Coamiles. I was fortunate to begin my education in Mexico where I started in the first grade. At this early level of education in Mexico, I learned how to read and write good enough to communicate by letter. I was not perfect at writing a letter, but good enough for a seven-year-old in his first year of school. I was also familiarized with basic mathematic skills and reading along with Mexican history, which I now realize was taught from an indigenous point of view. When I got to the United States, I heard Mexican history from a different perspective and I was sure it was not from the perspective that I first heard in Mexico. At that time, I was not sure what or whose …show more content…
This was very surprising and astonishing to me. I now realized that as I went through school all the prior years in America, history was being taught from a very different perspective. I had spent all these years confused until that day of Professor Yancey’s lecture. Although I already had respect for Professor Yancey, I now had great admiration for him. What was even more shocking was hearing it again, the same way I heard it in Mexico in Ethics 30 Class and now this semester in Ethics 37A both taught by Professor Covarrubias. I now know positively that not only is Mexican history taught differently in Mexico and America, but I also learned that Mexico teaches its history from an Indigenous perspective and America teaches history from a European perspective. Not only has my confusion been settled, but I am now filled with pride for my people once again. I feel lucky to have heard both ways that Mexican history was being taught, because it has allowed me to hear both sides of the story which gives weight to what I have learned in my classes. It also has awakened a passion in me as I know many Mexican’ and I recommend to all students of Mexican descent to take a class with these Professors just to ensure that they too know their true …show more content…
The widely known opinion is named The Bering Strait Theory. This Theory states that the indigenous arrived first in Mesoamerica by walking across a land bridge called the Bering Strait. It is obvious that this theory is considered the absolute truth because it is printed in many school textbooks for students to learn. The indigenous explained their arrival very different. They believed their ancestors to be of extraterrestrial races that had come to earth via space ships. Presently, the explanation of the indigenous on their initial arrival to Mesoamerica is problematic. This is due to the majority of people associating space ships to sci-fi movies that depict extraterrestrials as being green, with odd-shaped heads and acting in a much lower mental capacity than humans. This media depiction of extraterrestrials leads people to not take seriously the possibility of extraterrestrials arriving in space ships now or back then. This was recently demonstrated nationwide when the internet had news clips of a UFO sighting that showed the reporting staff laughing. While this is proof that this indigenous theory is problematic, this could be subject to change at any time. Over my lifetime, I have heard or seen reports of UFO’s that usually had questionable pictures at best. I feel that all who support the indigenous ideologies would surely feel that the recent UFO sighting on May 12, 2014 as

This week’s readings discusses different aspects of the Mexican war. In “Mexican Views of the Mexican-American War discusses the origin of the war between Mexico and the United States, it states “To explain then in a few words the true origin of the war, it is to say that the insatiable ambition of the United States, favored by our weakness, caused it”, the weakness that it’s referring to is the Mexican government. Like we discussed on Thursday, Mexico has always had a chaotic government that contributed the loss of Mexican land. It can be lead to think that if Mexico had a secure government, the loss of the land wouldn’t have happened. Mariano Otero’s “Considerations Relating to the Political and Social Situation of the Mexican Republic in the Year 1847” relates to the previous reading because he explains the Mexican government and weak army contributed to the loss of…

He thinks that the Mexican-American War was the most dramatic event in history between the two states. The U.S. referred to the event as “ The Mexican War”, while Mexico referred to it as “The U.S. Invasion.” This shows that while the United States thought they were protecting their land, Mexico saw it as keeping their border safe. Hearing about the Treaty between the U.S. and Texas in 1844, Mexico thought of this as a call for war. Mexico saw the United States occupying land that was not yet decided upon, as an attack.…

Just 15 years after the Civil War, a small but detrimental act had changed everything. Both Mexico and the U.S. were both large in size, and had contested land separating them. Thousands of Mexicans and Americans died, but they were content and happy at first. It wasn’t a smart idea for them to mix since Mexico was Catholic and for anti-slavery, while the Americans were protestant and were pro-slavery. In 1846 the biggest dispute between Mexico and America happened, but the war wasn’t justified between themselves.…

I agree with what Domingo Martinez stated in his memoir Boy Kings of Texas, "Texas Mexicans and Californian Mexicans are very different from each other –the same genetic code but completely different in accent and habit" (Martinez 93). However, while reading his memoir I found that although Texas Mexicans and Californian Mexicans are different, no one culture is superior or less “scary”. Taking into consideration the fact that he was a male growing up in the 1980's on the boarder of Texas and Mexico and also that he has Chicano parents, really helped me to strengthen my argument because many of the things that he was taught growing up changed as he got older. My experience growing up as the oldest to Mexican parents in San Jose, California…

The Mexicans’ reaction to the annexation of Texas also played an important role in deciding whether or not to go to war with Mexico. As, seen Mexico did not receive America’s addition of Texas as an occasion of happiness. Being a student at one of the most prestigious schools in the United States, you are given amazing classes which teach us various topics which eventually bring us back to our major or main topic of our undergraduate. Being a Mexican student, my knowledge is primarily about the struggles and stories from my own country. Coming to this school and meeting other minorities from other countries and taking classes that teach us about those countries as well, my knowledge about other problems and stories that happen to other students, families, and youth throughout the countries makes us realize that we are all the same and not alone when it comes to tragedies and inequalities like the ones many of us encounter in the US already. Attending "El Pais Que Viene” a Non-Profit Event & Book Launch, allowed me to connect the various topic and stories I learned in my Chicano studies class called “Central Americans” where we discussed the important events and inequalities that are happening throughout these central American countries and looking at stories through literature and media. Living in the Untied States as a minority, we tend to not tell our stories from our countries or even identify ourselves from those countries due to the negative image that the US has towards the people who come from these different countries.…

This week, as we left class, Angylyne and I discussed the documentary, Precious Knowledge, all the way to the Armitage el stop where we parted ways. It was hard to believe that the education board of Arizona had such a problem with the Latin Studies Program. In high school, I took both AP US History and AP European History. In both of these courses, we learned about radical thinkers and doers and people who decided to revolt against the status quo. Both of these courses are fine for students to learn, it’s fine for us to learn about Napoleon and the American Revolution, so what makes the history of Latin American different?…

Grasping some of the motives for that war and some of its immediate effects begins to provide students the kind of historical context that is crucial for thinking intelligently about the line that separates the United States and Mexico. Polk’s main reason for war with Mexico was to get the land of California. Polk made it seem like Mexico invaded America first and that he sent troops as a measure of defense just to get the support from Congress. When in truth he actually sent troops into the disputed and Mexico responded. There are two sides of Manifest Destiny the side that is glorified and preached across the land, in support of getting the land and the effects of conquering land.…

Yvonne Major Paper Essay 2 US-Mexican War Mexico invited Americans to live in Texas because they (Mexico) did not have the resources to help develop the land. The Americans, led by Sam Houston, were willing to help develop the land with the understanding they were to become citizens of Mexico. Although did ask for the American to move to their area of Texas, the Mexican government did not expect there to be such a huge influx of Americans coming into their area. Soon the American people and even some of the Mexican locals rebelled against the Mexican government asking to become part of the United States. They also joined some of the congress stating that Texas belonged to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase; therefore, was…
