When I was a kid, I remember that my grandmother used to make the best chicken stew I had ever tasted. It was the Puerto Rican family recipe. Well that is what she called it. She always made it in this big blue pot with dots all over it. Every time I seen that pot on the stove, I knew right away it was chicken stew day. The stew was filled with all sorts of different vegetables and spices. If I think about it really hard, the stew is a resemblance of me. I have all sorts of different ethnicities and different ways of living, but I still fit into this one big pot that I call family. My family is my cultural identity. When we get together we have family bonding time, all kinds of food, and a lot of dancing. Now, if you have never been to a Puerto Rican party you probably don’t know how much the un average people can eat. I think that I gain at least 50 pounds at my family parties. All of my aunties and uncles love to go all out on food. They make pasteles, gandule rice, flancocho, fried bananas, and many more. There is always all kinds of Puerto Rican food, but it’s not the only type of food we eat. My aunties bring their homemade chow mein and chow fun, and my uncles bring in burgers, steak, sub sandwiches and other American foods. I swear, my eyes are bigger than my stomach at parties. We like to take this time to enjoy the little things with one another. I like to try hard at charades because there is a money prize at the end. Bonding time is crucial to my family. It’s a time where we show our love and express it with fun and exciting games. It’s also another way to be competitive towards each other. I love beating my sisters in monopoly, even though it takes forever to finish a one game. Spending time with the ones you love, isn’t really that

Francisca M. Antman used data collected from the Mexican Family Life Survey (MXFLS) which included 9551. She used this because it included variables that she wanted to be used in the study. Which included whether or not either spouse has worked in the past 12 months, what gender the head of the household is, whether or not both spouses are in on decision making regarding big home expenditures, or if it was solely left to one spouse. Based on what she learned from the MXFLS and also taking into consideration the different variables she was able to come up with a formula. Since it is hard to know for sure what happens in the home when it comes time for big decisions to be made she had to take what she could and compare it the data that had been…

The American government, under president Hoover at the time, organized massive deportation campaigns that heavily impacted the well-being of both Mexican nationalists as well as American citizens of Mexican descent, seemingly casting a cloud of fear over the United States during the early 1930s. In the early twentieth century, the immigration of Mexicans to the United States was greater than ever. Due to the industrial growth at the time, Mexicans were invited by the United States government to immigrate to the United States and work. As many crossed the border in search of the higher wages that much of Mexico’s current economy could not offer them, this pattern of immigration was put into reverse by the Great Depression with the number of…

Place with a Memory Just like everyone in the United States of America, excluding Native Americans, I’m an immigrant and/or come from immigrant descendants. This means everyone has a race or ethnic group from which they descend from, and they may or may not follow the cultural aspects of their kin. For me, I am an immigrant who moved to the United States from Pakistan at the age of two (2002), so while my parents grew up with a great deal of culture and tradition, I did not; I only have what they attempted to affix on me. Being a first-generation immigrant, I grew up with all of my aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents directly on the opposite side of the world from me, so to me my real family was only between me, my mom, my dad, and…

As the youngest child, I never held as many responsibilities as my sister. My parents depended on my sister to help them on everything She was responsible for translating, contributing to household chores, and taking care of me. She did all this while also attending school and upholding respectable grades. It seems really rough to put so many responsibilities on a young girl, but this is the dominant discourse on childhood in a Latin American family. As Orellana explains, Latin American children are expected to help around the house, but the responsibilities held by each child is different.…
