The illegal drug trade is also called the black market where people manufacture, distribute, and the sale of drugs like cocaine, marijuana, and heroine. The trade of illegal drugs happens globally whether it is traveling by a ship, car, or plane. Everyday drug trafficking affects a person's life and the nation's economy by the flow of money to other countries and the increase of violence. Since the United States and Mexico share a “1,933 mile border that 350 million people cross” (Morris, 2013, p. 30) there is the opportunity for illegal drug trafficking. For example Matthew Jenner states “Ninety percent of all the cocaine that is imported into the United States passes through Mexico. One-third of all the marijuana in the United States comes from Mexico (2011, p. 905) with these statistics shows how influential Mexico is to the United States. Between the time period of 2007 and 2012 president Felipe Calderon in Mexico has tried to put a stop in drug trafficking but as Felipe Gonzalez says, “As a result, more than 50,000 people have died in the last six years and drug traffic has not declined” (2015, p. 1). Some improvements into the country of Mexico to stop drug trafficking and overall crime are improving their economy and having punishments. One way to improve their economy is to have the people save their money and not spend it on drugs. Also if the citizens of Mexico save their money this would reduce crime by not giving the drug cartel the reason to start violence.
