After Texas gained its independence from Mexico in 1836, the U.S. was hesitant in deciding whether it was the right decision to admit Texas into the union or not. This was because they understood that any form of annexation would lead to war between Mexico and the United States. Although they understood the potential consequences, the United States either way admitted Texas into the union bringing then debates on territorial boundaries and the definition of the new territory as a slave state or free state. The Mexican American War was a war fought on foreign soil between the United States and Mexico because they were in disagreement over where the Mexican-American border should be after the annexation of Texas. Polk’s Call for War In 1846, Congress received a message from President James K. Polk that discussed the difficult relations between the United States and Mexico and urged Congress to declare war against Mexico. He informed Congress of a recent massacre of American soldiers in an area that was believed to be owned by the United States, which convinced Congress to draft a declaration of war against Mexico. Even though American soldiers did perish at the hand of Mexican soldiers, I do not believe that the declaration of war was justified because the incident happened on land that both countries believed was rightfully theirs. Also, the events that followed the Mexican American War slightly indicated that one of the purposes of the war was…

Polk’s thirst to take hold of new territory from the Mexicans and defeat over their refusal to give America California also might have played a roll in his eagerness to start a war against the Mexicans. The United States under the command of the president at that time enraged Mexico into attacking US troops.…
