Metatheory is theory about theory that helps researchers understand why decisions about research methods, design, and analysis are made. The three metatheoretical approaches are ontology, epistemology, and axiology.
Ontology is the study of the nature of reality and has two key stances within it, realist and nominalist. Realist is the belief that the world exists in one way and is tangible, meaning it is the same for everyone. Nominalist, or social constructionist, is the belief …show more content…
The objectivist stance is the belief that the world is static and it is possible to know it and explain it to others. Contrastly, the subjectivist stance acknowledges that knowledge of the world is relative to the individual’s perspective.
Axiology is the study of values. Within axiology there are two stances, but they are not classified into explicit groups. On one side, it is believed that the researcher is objective and should act as the expert authority on their research, meaning they have say in what goes or does not and how things are done. On the other side, it is believed that research is a collective action and multiple perspectives of the participants are important to accuracy in the research. This means that authority is given to all research participants, those performing the research as well as those being researched.

A literature review gives context to current as well as past studies and compares the proposed research with what has been done in the past to help the researcher understand what has been done and what they need to do in their own research.
The four components of an annotated bibliography are to (1) establish credibility, (2) summarize the work, (3) explain how this source relates to the other sources being used, and (4) explain how you will use this source and how it relates to your research. A literature review has three components, (1) an introduction, where you are to introduce the topic and provide a preview of what will be seen in the rest of the review. In the introduction, the writer also makes a claim which is a brief explanation of what the research will show.
