I attended the Metropolitan Opera Rising Stars Concert series on Sunday, February 28, 2016 in Wright Auditorium. The stars consisted of Janai Brugger a soprano, Sarah Mesko a mezzo-soprano, Sean Panikkar a tenor, Trevor Scheunemann a baritone, and lastly Brent Funderburk the pianist. These performers are apart of the S. Rudolph Alexander performing arts series. The audience consisted of a wide range of people; from college students to the elderly citizens of Greenville, NC.

On May 10th, I had the opportunity to the “The Stony Brook Roots Ensemble. This was my first experience witnessing traditional American music played live. The venue and the ambiance were completely different from my time at the orchestra at the Staller Center. The performance took place in the Wang Center Chapel, which had surprisingly great acoustics than expected. At the orchestra there was very strict etiquette when in attendance, where one must be incredibly quiet in order to not disturb anyone else.…

In the 70’s a musical group by the name of Parliament took the music world by storm with their out of this world appearance and their own rendition of Funk music. Parliament was one of the key pieces in the development of funk music and modern music as well. They created what we know as P-Funk today that was a key element of the foundation of Hip-Hop. For my concert report I analyzed Parliament’s 1976…

Every day, I try to listen to a new piece of music. Whether it be a string group, unaccompanied choir, or even a percussion consort, I believe that by doing this, so much can be learned from just listening. About the mid-month of July, I came across this piece of music. I thought it was extremely fun and quirky at the same time! I had continued to listen to it, read some background information on the piece, and do a small amount of study on the work.…
