Metropolitan Museum Observation Paper

I chose to do my observation paper on the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There are many famous paintings located in this art museum but I will only be discussing one of them. There are various forms of art that are exhibited in this museum such as sculptures, paintings, and weapons. All of the items are covered in some pattern or design that really brings them to life. After examining all the types of artwork that the Metropolitan Museum of Art has to offer, it lead me to believe that they are full of rich works of art and sculptures that really capture people’s attention. The bright colors in this painting are red and they create a warm impression on the view; also, the shadows in the room give depth to the painting and allow the sunlight to emerge through the window. The formal properties are the symmetrical patters on the walls and floor tiles; they are the same and are repeated; however, the other portions of the paintings like the characters and the cloth on the table are not symmetrical. The overall feeling that Hooch provides is calm and relaxed. The subject’s faces are calm as they gracefully talk with one another. The soft sunlight shines upon them to create this warm and cozy impression. The technical properties in this piece really stand out as them provide texture and sensation to the viewer. The walls are full of squiggly and abstract lines that give texture the wall as being rough. The creases and many lines in the subject’s clothes create the impression of them being baggy and loose. Hooch does an outstanding job at illustrating various textures to help create his masterpiece. The expressive properties create the impression of calm attitudes because there is no action
