A Glimpse of the Future
(A Film Review on Metropolis by Fritz Lang) We always tend to imagine what our future society will look like. We are fascinated by modern discoveries and technologies; we can’t wait for this future world to happen. Director Fritz Lang found a way to exhibit the image of the future through his critically acclaimed silent film entitled Metropolis (1925). Lang’s silent sci-fi flick is inspired by German Expressionism approach and a masterpiece of his time. During those times there were an economic crisis and misery including the autocracy of the German government. These resulted to many labor movement due to the poor and abused working conditions. The social stratification theme of the film was adopted from the division of classes during the 1920’s that lead to the communist uprising in 1917 at the Soviet Union. Knowing that this film is released during the 1920s but still they have the idea of what modern society may look like. After seeing this I realized that the predictions showed in the film is true to our time. Colossal skyscrapers and establishment, state of the class roads and the robots presented in the film is really happening right now. Hence, I am thinking that the one who conceptualized the film is a brilliant mind. The imagination of Karl Freud as the cinematographer and the art of the set design led Otto Hunte, Erich Kettelhut, Karl Vollbrecht, and Edgar Ulmer boosted the realistic appeal of the film. Outstanding performance by Brigitte Helm as Maria, Gustav Fröhlich as Freder, Rudolf Klein-Rogge for playing the role Rotwang and the whole cast including the thousands extras helped to achieve the futuristic theme of the story. Innovative usage of special and visual effects was showcase in the movie; honestly speaking I wondered how they create these effects during that period of film making. I have no argue that why this film is one of the most influential German Expressionist films of all
