Background Research: What is a mixture: The reason for the chosen methods: Water is able to dissolve salt because the water molecules (H2O) attracts the sodium(Na) and chloride(Cl-) ions.
Hypothesis: If we use a magnet to separate the iron from the mixture we will only extract the iron from the mixture because nothing else in the mixture is magnetic. This is because iron is ferromagnetic. Ferromagnetism is what makes some elements attract to magnets. Ferromagnetism is the strongest form of magnetism. It is the most commonly encountered magnetism. Typically, it is the only …show more content…
The mass of each substance must remain the same to get the accurate measurements for each substance. To keep the mass the same, we will use methods that can effectively retrieve all of one substance without extracting another.
2: The method of measuring the mass of each substance/what measuring instruments we use (this also includes the units). If we use a different scale to measure each substance, then one measurement could be more accurate, and they could be measured differently. THis would make the data less accurate. To prevent this from happening we will use a digital scale for all mass measurements.
3: The substances in the mixture will stay the same. Even if heated or if water is added, the mixture will still consist of sand, salt, and iron. If they were to change, then the properties of the mixture would change which would force us to change our methods of separation. To keep them the same we will ensure that no chemical reactions occur during the experiment. To do this we will make sure no chemicals are …show more content…
To protect our eyes incase the water should splash we will be wearing goggles.
Method:
1: Collect all materials for the experiment.
2: Measure the magnet, filter paper, evaporating cylinder. Record all the measurements in a data table.
3: Hold the magnet close to the mixture. Once the magnet has attracted the iron, slowly pull up the magnet, keeping it close to the mixture so that the iron does not lose its attraction to the magnet.
4:Once the iron has been extracted from the mixture, and there is as little sand/salt so that the only iron is extracted, measure the iron with the magnet.
5: Subtract the mass of the magnet from the overall mass of the iron and magnet. This will ensure that you only record the mass of iron, and not both the iron and magnet. Record on a table.
6: Heat water in a kettle until it is hot, almost boiling.
7: Put both the salt and sand into a heating cylinder and add 75ml of hot water. Use a stirring rod to stir until the salt has dissolved. This will take approximately 2 ½ minutes.
8: Once the salt has dissolved, pour the water/salt and sand through a filter paper to separate the water/salt from the
