When he shares that he is a college professor the reader relaxes and begins to read and pay attention to what he is saying or in other terms teach the reader how to break out of the small bubble in which the reader has been trapped in, so to speak. If Bernard Roth would not have mentioned that he was a college professor the reader could then think, who is this guy and what gives him the right to tell me that I am trapped in my own personal bubble, but with telling the reader that he is in fact a college professor he appeals to the readers sense of security. Logos is the appeal to logic. In the achievement habit Roth begins to say that love is foolish and that someone should marry a spouse for logic, for example do not marry someone you love, but marry someone for money or land. There is an entire sub chapter in the achievement habit that clearly shows what Roth finds appropriate about marriage. “What we fall in love with are the qualities we wish we had or qualities we have and wish to share with the other person” (Roth 49). Roth clearly is siding with logic at this point and although this is very acceptable it is not the norm. A person wants to marry someone they can be happy with for the rest of their lives, that means you will love your spouse, the spouse will make you happy and you will make your spouse happy as well. There is that one flaw in Roth’s logic not every single person will agree one-hundred percent with him on this specific topic. Roth could very easily have persuaded some readers to think this way, but there is a high percentage that wish to marry for love to be happy for the rest of their life. Logos is a very successful method of persuasion and will always be. People will always seek out a logical way to go about a problem or situation they are stuck in and that is where if you want to influence someone use logic to do it successfully. Logos will always be a powerful tool just as the other two persuasion methods
