4 Variables: The Elderly and Epidemiology When it comes to the elderly in terms of epidemiology, there are many variables that come into play. Now, some of these variables are easier said than done. Some variables include pre-screening and regular check-ups once one hits a certain age. Another one would be automatic refills that are personally delivered to the clients. If refills were automatic and delivered to the elderly over a certain age, that could hinder epidemiology. Some older folks have health issues that are often prolonged simply because they aren’t taking their medicine like they are supposed to or for some reason can’t afford it.

Continuing on, prices on medicine that is known to be prescribed more often than not to those over a specific age should be lowered if not eliminated. For example, cataracts often occur more often than not in people over the age of 60 (A. Laitinen, L. Laatikainen, T. Härkänen, S. Koskinen, A. Reunanen, and A. Aromaa). With that information known, it would make since to make that specific medication discounted since statistical wise it would benefit the elderly monetary wise. Lowering not only prices on medication that seems to be prone for more elderly patients, but in some areas even eliminating it, depending off if the need is high enough. Lowering prices on medication would help the epidemiology of the elderly. If an older client can afford their medicine, the odds are that they will take it.

Last but not least, family involvement could make all the difference for the elderly and as it relates to epidemiology (Luchi, R.J., Taffet, G.E., Teasdale, T.A). Someone within the family taking accountability for their elderly loved one, and making sure they make appointments and go for
