Berea was located in Southwestern Macedonia. The established date of the city is unknown, but Berea has been surrendered to the Romans after the Battle of Pydna (168 B.C.). Moreover, it is the first Macedonian city that surrendered to the Roman Empire. During the reign of Diocletian (284-305 A.D.), Berea became one of the two capitals of Roman Empire. At the entrance of Berea, there was sign that quoted Acts 17:11 and says, “The Word of God is a power, neither Hell nor sin gainsay; fruit and blessing abound in the life where it holds sway.” There were three mosaic pictures (picture of Paul, Paul preaching the gospel to people at a bema, and Paul getting off from a boat to preach the gospel) and a statue of Paul. Those monasteries are one of the largest building complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Greece. Meteora was build at the end of 14th century, when Greece was threatened by Turkish raiders. Some say that it is the oldest man-made building in the world. When those monasteries were made, the only way to get to those building was to use removal ladders or a large net to haul people. The first people who moved to Meteora were an ascetic group of monks moved to the ancient pinnacles in 9th century A.D. They lived in the rock towers that are 1800ft high. The exact date of the ancient monasteries is unknown. In 1344, Athanasios Koinovitis brought a group of followers to Meteora. He founded the great Meteoron monastery on Broad Rock from 1356-1372. Living up in the mountain, monks were free from political upheaval and had complete control over the monastery.
