“We are crayons and lunchboxes and swinging so high our sneakers punch holes in the clouds.” The book Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson. The author uses literary terms to attract the reader’s mind and to keep them reading. for example imagery, imagery helps the story interpret itself more to the reader.

The protagonist in the book is Lia. She suffers from depression and anorexia. she struggles to kept her weight low and at the same time being depressed after her best friend died. as the story gets deeper her best friend, Cassie becomes the antagonist. Lia doesn't appreciate the presences of Cassie, lia starts to feel surrounded by her and can’t stand being near her. In this story Lia characterization is very revealing to the reader. “I failed eating, failed drinking, failed not cutting myself into shreds. Failed friendship. Failed sisterhood and daughterhood. Failed mirrors and scales and phone calls. Good thing I'm stable. ” In this quote she describes herself as failure, the way she sees and think of herself. Throughout the chapters neutral connotation occurs. for example she finds a boy she likes but she wants to run away with him. Her attraction for the boy is positive, however running away from her parents is a negative

Lias conflict was not being able to see what others saw. Her eyes confused her, they didn't let her see the real her. they only let her see a fat girl that everyone laughs at. this changed the way she lived. she struggle with fat that she didn't own, it poison her little by little. After Lia goes through hospitals and daily check up for her weight and health, dynamic finally happens by the end of the story. She changes the way she she acts. No more counting calories, starving, cutting. This just doesn't impact her life in a positive way but it also affects the people around her. Mostly Emma’s, Lia’s wants to change for her. Emma was her reason at the end, she didn't want to leave her alone in
