Everybody gets the flu sometimes. It is a quite a common occurrence. In fact, about five to twenty percent of the United States population get the flu each year. Many may not know this, but “flu” is actually an abbreviation. An abbreviation for what, one might ask?…
Several times throughout the story, the author uses metaphors while creating images and scenes. An example was a scene taking place inside the Hadley’s nursery, where George Hadley discovered an African Veldt. “Your mouth was stuffed with the dusty upholstery smell of their heated pelts and the yellow of them was in your eyes like the yellow of an exquisite French tapestry…” the author continues to build this scene, but the bulk of the metaphors he uses are in this passage. The way he writes the scene vividly describes how realistically the nursery makes the veldt seem, even though it is only an image on the wall.…
In the narrative poem ¨Oranges¨ by Gary Soto, he uses a lot of different types of figurative language like similes, personification, and imagery to ¨spice up¨ hs writing. I really like what he does with the different types of figurative language, and I think that if he didn't put any figurative language it wouldn't be as good as with figurative language. In the first stanza he uses imagery to explain how the girl looked as she came out of her house. He could have easily just said she looked good or great as she exited her home…
In Barry’s speech, he uses metaphors in several instances. The use of metaphors as a rhetorical device develops the theme of uncertainty. As his process is developed, metaphors appear left and right. Barry describes the scientific process by using example of the world around him; in order to become one of the best, to usurp uncertainty, they must look beyond the natural conventions and “a single step can take them through the looking glass into a world that seems entirely difference” (Barry). The contrast of events between those that exist and those that do not exist is apparent.…
There are many passages in Inkheart, written by Cornelia Funke, that the author helps me feel as if I am actually in the book, experiencing what the characters are. One way the author does this is by including figurative language. Funke uses figurative language that help the reader visualize and compare how something might look like given the examples. Similies can give a comparison that will help the reader see the scene that is going on. On page 31 it states, “On the right of the road a densely wooded slope fell steeply to the bank of a wide lake.…
Rhetorical Reading is grasping content, as well as taking a gander at content in the authors' point of view. Rhetorical reading requires rhetorical analysis in order to understand where the author is coming from. In other words to make a decision on the authors credibility. Rhetorical analysis attempts to answer 3 questions: what is the purpose of the author? , who is it intended for?, and how will the author present it to the audience?. Students utilize this by using several strategies such as identifying emotional appeals, figurative language, tone, cause and effect, or by comparisons in general.…
Mr. Vonnegut, After thoroughly analyzing and metaphorically murdering your novel, Slaughterhouse Five, I have come to a much overdue conclusion that I think you 'll very much enjoy. Your use of figurative language has captured my heart in a way that no one else could. I adore Billy 's incredible personality, I strongly dislike the German soldiers that imprisoned all of your characters and the people who wanted to murder Billy. I feel empathetic for Billy 's first wife, Valencia since Billy met Montana and dies in a plane crash. However, Mr. Vonnegut, you have truly and utterly wrecked me.…
Hunter saves some of her most memorable run-ons for the end of Dishes. In this example we have the nouns, adjectives, and verbs one after the other. They are even more clustered together because the writer chooses to get rid of punctuation in some instances. Page 29 reads, I ask the cashier to wait while I run to the dairy aisle, I am craving cottage cheese now, I get the biggest tub there is, large curd, I laugh to myself, I laugh and laugh, big girls gotta eat.” It is apparent to me what Hunter is trying to do with this run-on.…
The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien: Emotional Burden of Death In the book “The Things They Carried”, Tim O’Brien uses figurative language and symbolism to evoke certain emotions in readers and denote to the burden of death in the Vietnam War and the effects it had on soldiers. The story, at first, appears to be about the tools and equipment soldiers physically must carry during war and combat, but it’s not that simple. In war, soldiers deal with life changing experiences that they will carry emotionally for the remaining days of their lives. O’Brien has strong way of depicting this emotional challenge of death to people through his short story.…
The book The Yearling, by: Marjorie Kinnan Rawling is an ingenious novel. Out of the thirteen Pulitzer Prizes given out each year, Marjorie Kinnan Rawling received one in 1939 for The Yearling. She achieved this award by using artful syntax, sensory detail, and figurative language in such a stellar way to showcase a family’s move to Florida and the struggles within it. One of the three essential rhetorical devices that really tied the novel together was syntax.…
In a dingy London hotel, on a gray and foggy night, a man opened up his laptop to find one single message; KILL ALEX RIDER. Yassen Gregorovich, a cold-blooded assassin was trained and hired by the international crime organization, Scorpia, to take out anybody and everybody who got in their way. The night before coming face to face with one of his greatest enemies, Yassen drew parallels between his life and that of the fourteen-year-old spy, Alex Rider, through a series of flashbacks that brought the assassin’s story to life ☺ (figurative language). Yassen recalled the events that led up to him becoming an assassin, from the end of his childhood in the small Russian village of Estrov, to his first meeting with Scorpia. Throughout Yassen’s journey,…
At first glance, The Things They Carried seems like a collection of one man's war stories. But this novel is full of so much more, it talks about love, loss, and recovery. The author, Tim O'Brien, being a veteran of the war himself, used his writing as a way to cope with the trauma he experienced. O'Brien connects these themes though the use of conceit. Conceit is the likening of two very opposite things through figurative language in stories.…
Referring to ‘Metaphors we live by’, ontological metaphors are similar to orientational metaphors, as they also can be used for small amount of purposes, but at the same time ontological metaphors can be further specified in our life. Orientational metaphors mostly deal with orientation, and same as ontological metaphors do not provide structural…
In the books The selection series by Kiera Cass the main character, America, changes throughout the books The Selection, The Elite, and The One due to her feeling for the prince. For example, before she entered the selection she was poor and intolerant. ”Our money was stretched as tight a high wire, and our income was highly dependent on the season”(Cass 3).This quote is indicating that they are poor because when people say money is tight it usually means that don't have much of it,and need to spend it wisely. She also used a figurative language technique which is used to make a point. She compared the money to a high wire, and a high wire is very tight so a high rope walker doesn't lose their balance.…
Spoken word poetry is a form of poetry that the author gives life to through voice inflections and word play. In Shane Koyczan’s spoken word piece “To This Day”, Shane uses vivid mental imagery and particular emphasis to bring attention to bullying and mental illnesses. Through the telling of people's struggles he teaches he readers that it is possible to survive mental illnesses no matter the stigma put on you because of them, and that we all need to work together to spread the word and help the victims. For most people, working with loud noises is the best way to get attention, but for Shane, working with both noise and silence is more impactful.…
