Surrealism was a time period that started in 1924 and ended in 1966. It scorned the idea of rationalism or writings of realism, and heavily used psychoanalysis. They had elements of primitivism and mythism as well as they went to treat the unconcious mind. They thought that rationality was a blockade for the human brain's creativity of imagination. It did differentiate itself with Romanticism by using everyday life, however, it still kept some of the traditions from that time period. The kneeling man depicted on the left of the painting is Narcissus, who encounters his own reflection from the pool. His attitude is shown of kneeling and repenting with illuminating light on him. He fell in love with his own reflection, however, he died of frustration, which the gods transformed him into a flower. The hand shown in the right of the painting depicts narcissim, the love or admiration of oneself, and it symbolizes exaltation over every object. The water cuts off at an angle where the darker hand's reflection is not seen holding the narcistic egg. The egg is a symbolism of birth and it takes place in the head or the soul of the body. It shows a life changing transformation with the personality of no self-reflection in the dark and no recognition of anything that is incorrect. Other figures in the right side are eight human figures, checkered floor, dog eating something off the ground, and ants underground.The contrast is immense between the left and right side of the painting. The left side uses red, bluish, and yellow colors to create illumination of repentance with the man kneeling down, while the right side uses darker gray and blue colors signifying human ego and human
