For this assignment, I have chosen The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. Now, before I begin, I have to say that this is probably my favorite work by Franz Kafka, and it is probably my favorite of all the readings that we have read so far this semester. Also, I believe that the only thing in this world that is more isolating than being stuck inside the head of Mr. Kafka is being stuck inside the head of one of his many characters. In the short story The Metamorphosis Gregor wakes to find he has turned into a huge bug. As the story progresses, bit by bit Gregor loses the qualities that make him human. The first example is when Gregor could not sleep on his side as he was accustomed to. “this proved utterly impossible, for it was his habit to sleep on his right side, and in his present state he was unable to assume this position.…

The moment after I finished reading the novella for the first time was one of those moments when I found myself falling into a wishful fantasy involving me having the opportunity to engage in a very long conversation with the author. I had a hundred of questions on my mind. The second time I read “The Metamorphosis”, I had a hundred more questions leading to endless interpretations of what the story could be about, the infinity of possible hidden symbols each character, every sentence or tiny detail could represent. Kafka’s Metamorphosis can be read from numerous perspectives and through multiple themes, and perhaps that is exactly what makes it one of the most discussed modern literary works. For some, the metamorphosis is solely about Gregor’s body turning into a “monstrous vermin” (1156).…

Kafka’s “Metamorphosis” held an astonishing amount of retrospection for each of the characters, always pointing out to the past to better explain the present. This left the themes of the story subtle. While Spiegelman was forced to be more blunt in his approach to expressing his themes due to his choice of medium, he still portrayed the same theme as Kafka just as effectively. Each story deserves its own personalized narration to get the message to their targeted…
