Metallica is considered one of the most influential bands in heavy metal genre. Metallica was influential and part of it was because of their experimentation they did within their genre of music. Metallica’s song “One” shows a different style of the band by showing a more serious side of heavy metal. The song is very complex and the music fits with the lyrical content. The music fits with the lyrical content because the music is somehow directing the tempo on how the lyrics of the songs are delivered. The meaning of the lyrics also works very well with the music because the music kind of adds meaning to the lyrics delivered. Speed metal is similar to the tempo of punk songs because according to the book it “refers to the fast tempos and blazing guitar passages” which is one of the signature characteristics that the band had. Metallica is a great band and they have been very influential to many rock bands as well as different genres of music other than heavy metal. They have been influential to bands to most heavy metal bands and few big bands that I can name that were clearly influenced by them were Slipknot, Korn, The Misfits and even the pop-punk rock band Sum 41 was influence by them so much that they made a cover version of Metallica song “Master of Puppets” as a sign of respect. These bands were influenced by Metallica due to the bands famous speed metal style, their ambitious serious lyrics and their willingness to experiment with complex structure styles of music. Besides band they have also influenced other genres besides heavy metal such as the punk-rock genre, alternative, pop-punk, and even rap/hip-hop music. Their song “Rock Box” provides an example of hardcore rap that was able to crossover to mainstream audience which was one their main reasons for success. Part of their appeal and success was their mixture of rock guitar and hip hop beats, which was seen as adversaries at times. This mixture of rock guitar and hip hop beats was successful for Run- D.M.C. and created a signature sound for them. This type of style they used usually involved them starting their song with an opening drumbeat from a rock song, usually Aerosmith’s “Walk This Way” followed with the mixture of hip hop beats that they would later include and also a rock guitar sound. This unique signature sound they had had made them successful because by incorporating a rock sound into their music, it brought rap music to many white people who listened to rock who have ignored it if it didn’t have at least some elements of rock. This style was important and led for rap to break into pop mainstream status. Their style was and still is influential to later rap and hip hop artists because many hip hop and rap artists/bands incorporate Run-D.M.C. rhythmic style and hardcore rap style into their music. Examples of artists and groups that have incorporated Run-D.M.C. rhythmic style and hardcore rap style are Public Enemy , Aesop Rock, Linkin Park, amongst many others.
