Did you know that there's another high profile video game releasing today that isn't called Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain? Mad Max, an open world adventure set in the same universe as the iconic film franchise of the name, also hits store shelves.

The game's demos and trailers did a good job of showing of the gorgeous post-apocalyptic setting and extensive car combat and customization features, but what about the overall package? The first reviews for Mad Max have begun to trickle in and the early reaction is a mixed bag.

The game currently sits at a respectable 73/100 on review aggregator Metacritic. One should note that as of this writing, only 8 reviews have been tallied so far, so that figure is subject to change as more ratings come in.

He praised the game's beautiful desert sand box and satisfying combat mechanics, but wasn't too keen on its grindy, repetitive objectives and collectibles.

Game Informer's Matt Bertz also took issue finding the game's mechanics rather monotonous, awarding Mad Max a 7.5 out of 10.

Philip Kollar of Polygon wasn't as high on the game as the others however. He rated the game a 5 out of 10 and like the first two reviewers, slammed its tedious design. Here's what he had to say:

'You're always fighting the same groups of enemies, blowing up the same fuel tanks, tearing down the same sniper's nests with your car. The side content in Mad Max is textbook open-world bloat, providing plenty of the same things to do, over and over.'

Overall, it looks like Mad Max the game isn't the runaway success the most recent film Mad Max: Fury Road
