Here the player's first objective is to rescue a Soviet rocket scientist named Sokolov who is defecting to the United States, sabotage a new Soviet super-weapon known as the Shagohod, and to be as sneaky as possible to avoid getting caught and, subsequently, getting America into a bad light. This goes well at first, flowing under the backdrop of actual historical events smoothly, until the rocket scientist is captured by a defecting
American agent and taken away by a Soviet force led by a man named Colonel Volgin. Volgin has plans to seize control of the Soviet Union for himself and steals the Shagohod while capturing Sokolov. This is all covered up by Volgin firing an American-made nuclear warhead -- that he received from the defecting American agent -- on his own country, making the Soviets believe that America had launched an attack on them. This is where the game strays from the path and makes its own history as most people know that no actual warheads were launched or detonated during the Cold War. America now has a week to prove its innocence to the Soviet

Spies became a predominant part of the era, breaking into the mainstream of popular culture as they became the front line for a war based in information. This is displayed prominently in "Metal Gear Solid 3" as several characters are field agents, later revealed to actually be double agents, and some even triple agents, acting akin to the sly spies of the times. The game walks a line between the Hollywood perception of spies and the actual, gritty, realism of how demanding the job actually was, crossing through both, similar to how the game crosses fiction and history. Some scenes of the game have the player on exciting, yet unrealistic, Hollywood motorcycle chases, leaping over chasms and narrowly dodging explosions while other parts give much more realistic portrayals, involving spending large amounts of time lying in wait in tall grass to avoid the enemy. At times to survive it's necessary to kill and consume wildlife to keep up the player's stamina and it's also imperative that the player perform medical treatment on them self in the event of gunshot wounds, cuts, broken bones, food poisoning, or venomous animal bites.
