In a situation where learning is involved, learners will set their own goals, understand their own learning and evaluate their results for themselves: these are skills that are metacognitive in their nature.
Livingston (1997) provides an example of this: “I know that I have difficulty with word problems, so I will answer the computational problems first and save the word problems for last.”
Self –reflection, where an individual revisits beliefs, thoughts, memories, perceptions and their origins, can be considered as Metacognitive Reflection. If our biological senses cannot identify or notice it, then it simply does not. If we still tend to believe that it does, then it is our mind that is playing tricks with us and giving us a false impression. However, only one thing an individual can be sure of, is the existence of his/her own mind. This statement can be assured since René Descrates has stated “The ability to think, can verify an individual’s existence” (Perry, Bratman &Fiseherl, 2010). Whether or not an object/subject can be seen or felt, it could still exist, once the understanding of it being there or actually existing, tells us that it really does exist.
In Conclusion, Metacognition should be done by each and every individual for thinking critically and to analyze the environment around us. Metacognition allows us to better understand different ideas and concepts. Also with the help of an additional unit, our senses, it allows us to differentiate between what is real and what is not, what exists and what does not and what is in our mind and what is
