Metacognitive Learning Strategies Chapter 1 Summary

In this chapter it mainly explains metacognitive, learning strategies, problem solving, and teaching to transfer. The chapter begins by explaining the three metacognitive skills that are used to help with thinking and learning. The skills are planning, evaluating, and monitoring. Planning can help with strategies on how to do something and how to begin an assignment. The next skill, monitoring, helps with know what progress you are at on an assignment. Lastly, evaluating helps to make decision about the outcomes and if good or not.
The chapter then explains some learning strategies that can help students with future assignments. Learning strategies are beneficial for a student because it helps student become more engaged and focus on their work. One way to incorporate learning strategies is with concept maps, READS, and CAPS. A student using concept maps can help to get a visual aid to see how the charts connect with one another. A learning strategy of using READS is helpful because help with asking question when reading, which then leads to students understand the reading itself.

In this chapter, it is suggested that a student use the acronym IDEAL; which stands for Identify problem, Define goals, Explore possible strategies, Anticipate outcomes, and Look back on your work. This type of problem solving can help a student understand the problem accurately and learn from any mistakes might have done and improve the problems. Another thing that is helpful for a student when solving problems if for the teacher to be creative. The teacher can be creative with solving problem is by thinking more outside the box and restructuring the problem in a new or different way. When a teacher uses creative problem solving, it can help the students process the information better and helps them to gain more creative thinking
