I am replying to Maria Vargas post on scenario number four about arthritis. Ms. Vargas, provided a very detailed and descriptive scenario where she had to dump out coins from a zip wallet onto the floor and pick them back up while wearing ace bandages wrapped around her knees and gardening gloves on her hands. Initially, while reading her post I wanted to laugh because I could imagine trying to do this myself, and how awkward and clumsy this must have felt. But, regrettably I realize this subject isn't something to laugh about. Reading her post gave me more insight on what it must feel like to suffer from arthritis, and that we as nurses need to have patience and understanding while treating our patients.…

When I was seven years old my life was unequivocally changed; the movie Cheetah by Jeff Blyth was introduced into my life. The story revolves around two California teens that travel to Kenya with their parents and befriend a Masai boy and raise a cheetah cub “Duma.” The three teens quickly learn, they need to set Duma free, so she may have a chance to survive in the wild. However, once they find out that poachers have taken the cheetah to race against greyhounds, the three teens embark on a journey to save her. From that moment forward, I made myself a promise to save animals.…

HIPAA in the Nursing Field Privacy is a term that applies to all people, it is a right entitled to everyone. In this modern world with smart phones and social media, it can be a challenge to recognize the boundary lines of privacy when taking care of critically ill patients. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act was passed by Congress in 1996 to define the rules and regulations concerning multiple topics, one of which is called the Privacy Rule (Mcgowan pg. 61). This rule established national standards to protect patients’ personal health information and medical records. Since that time there has been advancements in technology and now there are things like electronic health records, electronic Pyxis, and online databases…

Artificial cranial deformation—or the practice of intentionally altering the shape of a person’s skull—has been practiced by Neanderthals about 40,000 years ago until very recently, maybe even still today. People on every continent except Antarctica have done it, making heads more cylindrical, cone-shaped, and ridge, bumpier or flat depending on the area. (Romero, et al 2010: 2-5) This paper argues that Mayans practiced cranial deformation to show an association with a particular social group. Further research should focus on the effects of cranial modification on effects.…

    What Is Komodo Dragons?

Rather than stalking its prey, Komodo Dragons rely on camouflage as they patiently lie in wait, covered by tall grass. When the perfect opportunity at any passing prey arises, the dragon springs, using its powerful legs, sharp claws and serrated, shark-like teeth to eviscerate its prey. Once finished, virtually nothing is left because they devour everything. If the prey is large, the lizard tackles its legs first to nock it down, as their long claws dig into the body, then quickly rips into the body (as animal bleeds to death). They have been known to take down adult water buffalo weighing over 1,300 pounds.…

SAN DIEGO >> U.S. researchers are launching studies on Mexico’s red-crowned parrot — a species that has been adapting so well to living in cities in California and Texas after escaping from the pet trade that the population may now rival that in its native country. The research comes amid debate over whether some of the birds flew across the border into Texas and should be listed under the Endangered Species Act. Parrots in U.S. urban areas are just starting to draw attention from scientists because of their intelligence, resourcefulness and ability to adapt. There is also a growing realization that the city dwellers may offer a population that could help save certain species from extinction.…
