His father Jeb is telling him that ever since his wife died he should not grieve, he should move on. Jeb is explaining to his son that just because Catherine, his wife, is not alive anymore does not mean she would want him to be hurting. She would want him to be happy and in love. Jeb is saying that he must have messed up in raising Garrett because he sees himself when he looks at his son. Additionally, he does not want to see himself because after Jeb’s wife died he suffered and did not want to find love ever again. He wants his son to not be like him; he would rather him learn from Jeb’s situation. “I’d like to see someone who learned that it’s okay to go on, that it’s okay to find someone that can make you happy” (261). Summary In the second chapter of his book, “The Message in the Bottle: How Queer Man Is, How Queer Language Is, and What One Has to Do with the Other”, Walker Percy argues that lack of independence, or as he prefers to call it, “sovereignty” of an experience, as well as presence of “symbolic complexes”, or interpretations of an experience in the eyes of the public, deprives an individual of a truly full experience. To prove his point, he uses examples of tourists and college students. For instance, a tourist visiting Mexico and getting lost in an authentic tribe (Percy 51), as well as of traveler in France seeing a stereotypically French (Percy 55) behavior exemplifies how transfer of sovereignty is ceded to an expert: the encounter does not appear fulfilling until someone with higher perceived level of knowledge certifies the experience. In a similar fashion, educational experience becomes spoiled by two primary concepts: the “packaging” of information (delivering information in pre-organized, recurring way), and theory behind the studied subject.…

At some time in life, a person will experience death of a relative or lose something that was very important to he or she. After that traumatic event, will that person confront his or her pain, or will that person bury it deep within them? Both ways are possible, however, only one is effective in the long term. According to Tim O'Brien, the most effective way to heal after a traumatic experience is to share stories. In Tim’s book, The things they carried, he used the motifs of loneliness, life, and the mood of nostalgia to illustrate the importance of sharing stories during a healing process.…

Richard Chase argues that Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter is to be taken as a work of fiction or a myth of sorts, and not as a social commentary on political issues. Chase thoroughly describes the allegorical symbols in the novel and considers it as an “artview of the world”, but still touches on the political problems discussed in Hawthorne’s book. He agrees that “...there are elements of social comment in The Scarlet Letter...” like feminism for example.…

Similar to how theatre works; the curtain opens and the entire set is visible, then characters go onstage and the focus is drawn to a specific part of the set. The Glass family loves theatre, and shows that even their very lives are a performance. The detailed description of each room leads to the reader being able to imagine what the scene looks like. The Glass family Bathroom, Living Room, Seymour and Buddies old room, and the Parents room are all prime examples of how Salinger describes the setting. Salinger's usage of spaces inside the novel sets the scenes in which the characters are present.…

Why would an old-school barber have the thoughts about killing their customer? Why would a dentist make the removal of a tooth so painful for a mayor? The story “Just Lather, That’s all” written by Hernando Tellez and the story “One of These days” constructed by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, both of these stories have strong similarities between both of them but what really sticks out is how similar both the Barber is just as similar to the Dentist. Both of these stories have hatred in them either if it's for killing people that you think are right, or it's for the job title. The man named Torres “Just Lather, That’s All” is a bounty hunter people would call him.…

Everyone faces hardships differently, and with every hardship, individuals have the verdict of whether to persevere or surrender. In the novel Nectar in a Sieve, the author Kamala Markandaya explores themes of optimism and how it weaves its way into the hardships of Rukmani’s and Nathan’s lives. Throughout the novel, the family faced many challenges. These challenges were indeed difficult at times, but certainly not impossible to deal with when one is in an optimistic state of mind. Though the present can be unkind—and under the circumstances, all may seem hopeless—the outcomes will be favorable in the end if hope is instilled.…
