The other debris will most likely sink or enter the Great Pacific Garbage Patch that is located between California and Hawaii. They were able to make these predictions due to the ocean currents. Prior to reading Chapter 1 and “At Sea in a Deluge of Data”, I realized how elementary my definition of information literacy was. I believed information literacy was the ability to find information using a variety of research methods. So, you can imagine reading the definition was surprising, yet the definition seemed simplistic. Per our course text, “Information literacy is the ability to identify a need for information and successfully locate, evaluate, and use that information ethically and legally for a determined purpose”.…

Marine debris can degrade marine habitats, endanger marine and coastal wildlife and pose threats to human health and safely. Scientists and explorers believe that the best way to accrue the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is to limit or eliminate the use of disposable plastics and increase the use of biodegradable resources in human’s everyday life. Since the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is so far from any country’s coastline, no nation takes the responsibility or provides the funding to clean it up.…

In the 1500's, explorers traveled across the seas in large ships that carried crew members, goods, and wealth. These ships navigated the ocean by using toois like the compass, chip log, astrolabe, cross staff, and many more. With the compass, one of the explorers of the 1500's, Christopher Columbus, noticed that north on the compass was not actually true north. He used this to predict his arrival in America. A chip log was a circle of wood that was attached to a line on a reel, Knots were tied at intervals along the line, and this helped measure how fast the ship was travelling.…

Garbage Patch, which Susan Casey informed us about in her essay “Our oceans are turning into plastics.. Are we?”, and as it’s name suggested the patch is filled with plastic wastes. “The area in which it accumulates is now twice the size of Texas”, as Casey stated in her essay. Unintentionally discovered by Charles Moore while he was sailing his way back from a race; the Garbage Patch stretches on for hundreds of miles and to make things worse, the South Pacific, the North and South Atlantic, and the Indian Ocean all has their own Garbage Patch. On the bright side, Charles Moore created Algalita Marine Research Foundation to spread the existence of the Garbage Patch.…

The debris is hauled away in many forms of transit. Some of the most common ways it is distributed to landfills and other approved collection facilities are via dump trucks, barges, freight trucks and cargo ships. The process is a long and daunting one and very emotional for those who were affected by the disaster. One thing in particular that makes the debris removal process even harder is the waste water and the toxic sludge left behind. The hurricane generated more than 100 million cubic yards of disaster debris.…

A tsunami is a series of waves that occur over a period of time, causing mass destruction when it moves onto land from building up in the oceans. Tsunamis are considered to be one of the most dangerous natural disasters to ever occur on Earth. Although tsunamis can form because of volcanic eruptions, rapid changes in pressure, or other factors, majority of tsunamis are developed as a result of earthquakes underneath the ocean on the Earth’s crust. In the beginning stages of a tsunami, the sea floor starts to shift upwards; these shifts cause ripples in the ocean waters, resulting in the tsunami waves (Tarkbuck, Lutgens, and Tasa 380). One of the most known tsunamis to ever occur happened in the Indian Ocean near the island of Sumatra, Indonesia in December 2004.…
