Mesothelioma symptoms might not appear until between 20 and 50 years after the exposure to asbestos. This makes the disease difficult to diagnose or screen for. However there are now some screening procedures which show some degree of effectiveness.

Mesothelioma is a relatively rare form of cancer, found in only about 1 person per million compared to a lung cancer incidence of about 1000 per million people exposed to smoking. A combination of asbestos exposure and smoking can increase a person's likelihood of getting the mesothelioma but smoking on its own has not been show to cause the disease.
