Malignant mesothelioma began to show signs in South Africa amidst the late 1950s and throughout the 1960’s in the mining population. The experts claimed that asbestos caused mesothelioma disease, but it was never officially determined to be the actual cause of mesothelioma back then. It actually wasn’t until the 1960s when they finally did a study comparing people working with asbestos with those that did not work with asbestos. In 1972, OSHA began to regulate asbestos. Later, on July 12th 1989, the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) finally banned asbestos products due to it being heavily related to causing mesothelioma. Once the ban was set in place, products that previously contained asbestos could no longer be produced with asbestos in them. Companies would have to find a substitute for the mineral.
After this, most major countries that were industrialized stopped using the material. Under developed countries still used the material, regardless of the risk. The Sarcomatoid variant is harder to find since it appears as tissue and when looked at would appear the same as normal tissue. Biphasic is almost the same as Epithelioid in a sense because it will mimic the tumors, but its cells differ and can be located in other areas of the tumors.
