(Miller 1) That equates to a little more than two hundred million people who use their cell phone for some sort of instant messaging. Automobile accidents are one of the leading causes of death in the United States today, texting and driving is one of the biggest reasons why. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration eighteen percent of all fatal crashes are caused by distracted drivers (FCC 1). A person who is texting and driving has a twenty three percent greater chance to cause an accident than one who is not distracted. (FCC 1) Forty percent of teenagers stated that they have been in a car while the driver is on their cell phone texting (FCC 1). Even though teenagers and adults know that texting and driving can put their lives and the lives of others in danger, they still do it because in their mind the importance of a text outweighs the risk of an accident.
