Although Bourne Island, where the story is set, is a fictional place its location is quite a strategic one for colonialism. The island looks west to Africa and the slaves who perished on route to the New World. The island was completely under colonial rule so that if long trips have to be made the island could be used as a stopover point. There are two classes of people on the island, the colonizers and the colonized people. It has been suggested, by Merle, that the colonizers not only colonized their land but also their minds. I’ve taken this to mean that these colonizers are changing the way the colonized people act and quite possibly even think.
