Meriwether Lewis was born August 18, 1774, in Virginia. He had to live some of his childhood without his real dad because William Lewis died when in battle when Merriwether was 5. Merriwether had 2 siblings, Jane Lewis, his sister, and Reuben Lewis, his brother. His mom Lucy Meriwether remarried a guy named Captain John Marks about a few months after William's death. It was common back then for widows to remarry early and those two had a girl named Jane. Lucy changed her last name but Meriwether is her maiden name and lewis kept that last name. When Lewis was 18 he attended a local school taught by ministers and that is where lewis mostly got a lot of his smarts. Lewis also went to college he went to Liberty Hall. Meriwether lewis was an explorer joined by William Clark but most people know them as Lewis and Clark. When people hear these two names they think all they did was explore. Witch that is mostly what they did but lewis had experience in the Whiskey Rebellion War as a commander. Clark was an explorer the whole time he knew lewis. But they didn't start exploring until president Thomas Jefferson elected them to explore for him. They explored unseen parts of the west and parts of Oregon, they also found …show more content…
But lewis also was an amazing commandor the Whisky Rebellion war he was elected to this job because Jefferson knew and trusted lewis for this hard task and he did it wonderfully. After the war lewis and Clark went off on there long expedition to find new land and to explore. Of course, they had some sort of crew with them to help but they were the main leaders. There crew helped with carrying equipment and help take care of there dog.And there dogs name was Seaman he was a Newfoundland he helped a lot with protection and sniffing out if people or animals are near or if they have been here
