As our country celebrates its 59th Independence anniversary with thunderous cheers and applause, colourful bursts of fireworks and lively and energetic cultural applause, Malaysians of all races and ethnicities are once again united as one. Despite the differences in backgrounds and ideologies that we share, we can rejoice in the freedom and victory that we enjoy as one prosperous and harmonious nation. Even our Merdeka celebrations showcase our diversity in its fullest form. We have the trademark Chinese drum dance, the traditional Malay Tarian Zapin, Ancient tribal dances from the Iban and Kadazandusun native groups as well as Indian Sita performances. This is the true harmony that we share despite the wide diversity that sometimes, tend to drift us apart. Many foreigners are in awe of how we Malaysians can live in such peace although being so different from one another Unbeknownst to them, there are still many areas of our lives where we still fail to live in perfect peace. There have been countless controversial episodes and conflicts from the most trivial to prominent issues in which we have yet to achieve tolerance, agreement and acceptance. Even our leaders are constantly bickering, ambushing and charging at each other in the national political battlefield. In our country’s multiracial community, this harmony will enable all races to work together in close cooperation to strive for our nation’s steadfast and stable advancement in economy. These are crucial times, whereby nations around the world are finding it difficult to balance between income and expenses due to the pending world economic crisis. Even wealthy nations like the U.S.A. are experiencing the aftermath of gradual economic collapse, including falling wages, growing homeless and jobless community and increased dependence on foreign sales. If we can all afford to work in harmony and unity, our nation will be able to overcome this dilemma and quandary whilst giving each and every one of us quality life. In Malaysia, we have the talent, potential and resources and we can rise to be one of the top-earning countries in the world if only we are willing to put aside our differences and work hand-in-hand. This will prove to flourish the local brands and businesses such as vehicle manufacturing and petrochemistry that have always been the pride of our nation. The diversity that we possess also contributes to the wide range of highly sought products that we produce locally and traditionally, especially the tantalizing food and intricate crafts.
