Attention, citizens of Mercy Shore. This is not a drill. The Risen are approaching us, and they are very thirsty for flesh. I advise you all to stick together as families, friends, acquaintances. Remember what you have been training for. Remember who you stand for. Starting now, conserve your resources and reduce your rations. At first sight of a Risen, take shelter. Conserve your ammunition. The President just came on the television.” Britney called at her mother, who was inspecting the grocery store shelves now half filled with bananas and loaves of bread. She had insisted on Britney tagging along to help her stock up on groceries. Little did she know she had a far greater reason to buy out the store now.
“That’s great, honey.” replied Bertha, not actually listening to her daughter. Bertha was aware of Britney’s imaginative tendencies, which is why she never bothered to listen to her (insert imaginative adjective) daughter.
“No, Mom, this is real. The dead...the dead are alive again.” Britney hesitated, waiting for her mother’s reaction. There was only silence for the next three aisles they passed. The cart squeaked obnoxiously, drawing the eyes of uneasy strangers as they hustled to fill their carts.
Finally Bertha broke the silence with a whisper, “I was positive it wouldn’t come until the year 2435.” Britney raised her head slightly, just enough to catch a glimpse of her mother. She noted her tired look and the swollen bags under her eyes. She also couldn’t help but notice the way her lips were turned, slightly downwards.
